Montgomery Recovery Services staff speaks on Capitol Hill about Opioid epidemic
By Brianna Hurwitz | November 15, 2017
Residents in Montgomery County were represented on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Wednesday night by Angela Caldwell, Montgomery Recovery Services (MRS) program coordinator and lead counselor, and pertinent staff. Caldwell addressed attendees regarding the country-wide opioid crisis that is killing more than 33,000 people as of 2015, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Caldwell advocated for the opioid treatment program (OTP) for patients at MRS. She compared OTP to other medications prescribed by doctors at other medical facilities, expressing the similarities.
“...I realized that methadone and opioid treatment is a very viable medication, not unlike someone who’s taking Wellbutrin for depression or insulin for diabetes. In what other medical arena do we say ‘okay, you’ve had enough insulin. Let’s stop taking it. Let’s stop the coverage,’” Caldwell stated.
Caldwell closed her speech reading a handwritten letter from a client who’s been attending MRS since 2012.
“I have managed to stay off of heroin for 23 years with the help of this program and the support I have received. ...My depression and anxiety still remain, but I have hope that I can make it to another day with the support I get from my counselor and my ‘Truth Group.’ ...I know this program has saved my life,” said the client.
MRS is an opioid outpatient treatment facility established in 1997 located in Rockville, Md. Montgomery Recovery Services strongly believes medication combined with counseling is the best form of treatment. MRS advocates for the rights of clients in the community. Please contact 301-762-5300 to speak with a staff member regarding future events.
